April 28 - The Muscat Municipality is a carrying out a campaign at various commercial centres to monitor whether special tissue wipes or hand sanitizers are provided at the entry points to ensure the health safety of shoppers, as they use shopping carts.

Shoppers have welcomed the campaign and added that even some of the leading hypermarkets in the city do not care to follow the rules that stipulate them to offer sanitizers to shoppers before they use the carts. "It is also necessary for these retailers to have a mechanism to wash the shopping carts at regular intervals," they said.

"I it is not enough to just put sanitizers, ordinary population should be made aware of about the harmful effects of the generally unclean shopping carts and trolleys," said a post on social media.

According to studies, shopping carts in hyper and super markets are more likely to have E. coli present than escalators, ATM machines, and restaurant tabletops and condiment and cutlery holders, among other things.

Escherichia coli (abbreviated as E. coli) are bacteria found in the environment, foods, and intestines of people and animals. E. coli are a large and diverse group of bacteria. Although most strains of E. coli are harmless, others can make you sick. Some kinds of E. coli can cause diarrhea, while others cause urinary tract infections, respiratory illness and pneumonia, and other illnesses.
