Seminar highlights importance of local sourcing for SMEs

MUSCAT, SEPT 29 - Senior procurement professionals joined representatives from Small/Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) to discuss the ‘Importance of Local Sourcing in Oman’. The event was hosted by the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS) Oman branch. The event featured a presentation from Warith al Karusi — Chairman of the Omani Centre for Skills Development, who spoke about ‘Creating A Sustainable Solution in Developing SMEs, as well as a presentation from Sam Achampong, Regional Director for CIPS, who spoke about the importance of ‘Local Sourcing and Supporting SMEs’. Other presentations featured Anthony Blenman, Procurement Advisor at Ooredoo Oman and Haris Aslam, COO of the Roumaan Internet Group.


The event, held at the newly built Fraser Suites Hotel in Muscat was attended by delegates from several organisations including Bank Muscat, Royal Oman Flight, Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), OmanTel, Sohar Aluminium, Ooredoo, Oman Aviation, Majid Al Futtaim (MAF), Muscat University and many others. Discussions during the event highlighted the need to support an infrastructure of SMEs in Oman as well as the proactive measures currently being undertaken by public institutions as well as private organisations to assist in this objective. Sam Achampong, Regional Director CIPS Middle East, North & West Africa stated: ‘’It was refreshing to engage in such an event which provided a forum for high level knowledge sharing and discussion between Procurement practitioners and SMEs.’’


This was the first of many such events planned in the coming months across a diverse range of subjects in alignment with CIPS’ initiatives to support best practice in procurement across the region and globally. CIPS Oman Chairman M B S Gopal Naidu, Vice Chair Noor al Rashedi and National Lead Rashad al Balushi hosted this event.
