SALALAH: Students drawn from different schools in Salalah gathered at famous water spring Ain Jarziz and did exhaustive cleaning on Thursday to mark the Earth Day, which is observed on April 22 globally. The cleaning was part of an awareness campaign organised by the Directorate General of Tourism in Dhofar in cooperation with the General Directorate of Environment and Climate Affairs and the Environment Society of Oman.

About 150 school students took part in the cleaning drive. A large number of volunteers and representatives from private and public sector establishments took part in the drive.

Ain Jarziz spring serves as a main channel for natural water for cattle and farms downstream the Salalah Dam. The spring has 1,720 metres of traditional masonry hollow blocks and cemented rip rap open channel through the spill way channel. It also has 75 metres of fusible ridge through the spillway channel.

The participants called for active involvement of the community in such drives, as they are the end users. “The issue demands everyone’s attention because this is not possible by the government or any one agency to tackle. Citizens play important role in conserving water and saving it from pollution,” said an official of the Ministry of Tourism.
