Muscat, March 2  -

In an attempt to make rides in tourist cabs safer, taxi drivers have been put through a training programme by the Ministry of Tourism.

A total of 150 drivers who attended a training programme received their certificates on Wednesday, said the ministry.

The news, which went viral on social media, was welcomed by the public, with some demanding similar training for those driving public taxis.

“Sometimes I feel I’m not safe inside a taxi. They do drive carefully but when they find someone hailing a taxi, they become careless,” said Mohammed Saleh, an Omani based in Muscat.

Defending the drivers, Bashir al Ghunaimi, a taxi driver, said: “We should not make such generalisations. Most taxi drivers follow traffic rules.”

He, however, said the training is “good to remind the taxi drivers about safety measures they have to consider when driving”.

Mwasalat, Oman’s national transport company, last month unveiled its brand identity for the company’s much-awaited taxi service.

Mwasalat earlier announced its plans to introduce new taxi services in Muscat and invited tenders for purchase, installation and maintenance of a taxi management and booking system.
