Muscat, July 25 -

A meeting of all the transport companies will be held on Wednesday in an attempt to streamline their operations.

The meeting, to be held at Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI), will look into measures to be adopted for overcoming challenges facing the sector.

Transport companies are beset by several problems.

“Some of the issues pertain to securing government contracts (for transporting goods) and the rules governing heavy trucks,” said a source at the OCCI.

Heavy trucks and other goods carriers face challenges, including proper parking space, designated routes and timings for plying inside cities. These are key issues that would be discussed at the meeting.

On the transportation of students, the company owners said a revised set of regulations was the need of the hour.

“A major issue we are facing is the absence of a caretaker who can look after children in the school bus,” says Rajeev, who runs a transport company that shuttles children to and from Indian schools.

Although the law allows for a caretaker (usually a woman), along with the driver, more often than not, the rule is flouted.

Incidents of children being left behind in the school bus or meeting with accidents while boarding/ alighting have been reported.

“A strategy to resolve these issues will be discussed at the meeting so that safe transportation can be provided to children,” said

the source.
