By Haridev Pushparaj — MUSCAT: Jan. 28 -  It was a carnival-like atmosphere that participants and media were witness to at the Al Mouj during and after the course of the Muscat Marathon. The prestigious annual affair in the Muscat calendar had 1,300 runners from around 74 nationalities in the fray and it made for a great run. There were professional, semi-professional and amateur runners testing themselves against the elements and a whole lot of people running for charitable causes. Omani sailors Nasser al Mashari and Ali al Balushi were also running during the event and were taking part in the 10k.

“It was a wonderful experience. To run along with so many people and in this sort of a competition is nice. We enjoyed the 10k a lot. It is good for Oman as it will promote the country as well. I am glad to be associated with the marathon,’’ Nasser said. Winner of the Open junior 10k for females, Prianka Maharaj was elated after her victory. “This is the first time that I am winning and my second event ever. I am very happy being a part of an event such as this. It was a lot of fun with my fellow runners spurring me on along the race,’’ the ninth grader from American British Academy (ABA) said.

“I hope to run many more marathons and hopefully get better,’’ said Prianka, who is an Australian national. Germany’s Birgit Schulz, who won the Half Marathon for females, was thrilled after her performance as well. “I am happy with my timing today here. I have an event coming up in Abu Dhabi and this event was preparation for that one,’’ she said. Schulz was all praise for the organisers and the event as a whole. “The marathon was very well-organised. The volunteers did a great job with the water packs and first aid. The weather was just perfect, it was great overall,’’ she added.
