Chinese company Royale introduced FlexPai, the world’s first commercial foldable phone, at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The 7.8-inch gadget can be used as either a phone or a small tablet. The Android device is basically a tablet in its extended mode that becomes two phones when its display is closed.

Royole, an America-based Chinese company that specialises in manufacturing flexible electronics, provided the device with two SIM slots and an auto-detection system that only shows content on the half of the folded screen that the user is facing to. The screen adjusts to different orientations and viewing options.

One of the phones serves as the primary phone, whose content spreads out onto the full display when the device is opened.

The device runs on the OS Water along with Google Android 9.0. It uses 2.8GHz octa-core Snapdragon chipset, expandable memory and a 3,800-mAh battery that users can charge using Royole’s charging technology Ro Charge.

The FlexPai also features two cameras: a 20-megapixel telephoto lens and a 16-megapixel wide-angle camera. Both serve as rear and front-facing cameras when the screen is folded. The phone likewise features a fingerprint scanner.

“FlexPai is the world’s first commercial foldable smartphone with a flexible display, a combination of smartphone and tablet,” Royole described its device.

The device is already available in Beijing since October.

The 6GB of RAM/128GB version costs $1,318, while the 8GB of RAM/256GB variant sells for $1,469.

FlexPai is not the only flexible phone that will hit the market in the coming months. Samsung, LG, and Huawei are also working on their own versions of foldable phones.
