Each season, the Royal Opera House Muscat welcomes families and children to enjoy programming specially selected for them. Animal tales have been chosen as the theme for a very special family concert to be held at the ROHM this Saturday, which features the famous and ever-popular tale of Peter & the Wolf in different forms.
The story of Peter & the Wolf was set to music in a wonderful symphonic work for narrator and orchestra that the famous Russian composer, Sergei Prokofiev completed in 1936. Peter & the Wolf is Prokofiev’s most frequently performed symphony, as well as one of the most popular pieces in the entire classical repertoire.
The concert will begin with music that sets the tone for the evening with wonderful arias about animals by Gioachino Rossini as well as by Maurice Ravel played by the Orchestra of Opéra de Rouen conducted by Maestro Fabrizio Maria Carminati.
The opening music is followed by a shadow puppet theatre that is bound to fascinate and delight every child in the audience. Then comes an amazing stop-frame animation from BreakThru Films, directed by Suzie Templeton, which won an Oscar® in 2008 for Best Animated Short Film.
Played live by the Orchestra of Opéra de Rouen, music from Prokofiev’s action-packed score vividly accompanies the film. We seem to hear Peter’s duck arguing with a little bird, while his pet cat stalks them quietly. Explosive chaos ensues with the arrival of a wolf intent on swallowing the poor duck. Peter saves the wolf from encroaching hunters and the duck is heard quacking inside the stomach of the wolf! This timeless tale is beautifully interpreted for contemporary sensibilities through theatre, cinema and music in ways that transform Peter’s adventures with animals into fabulous and unforgettable entertainment for everyone.
