Road accident rate drops 16.5 per cent

MUSCAT: The Sultanate saw a 16.5 per cent drop in accident rate until the end of July 2017 as against the same period in 2016, according to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).


The number of accidents declined to 2,349 compared with 2,814 in the same period last year. There were 360 accidents as against 385 last year.


The total number of deaths from accidents until July 2017 dropped 5.8 per cent to 374 as against 397 in the same period last year. Among the dead were 244 Omanis (193 males, 51 females) against 246 last year.


The number of expatriates who died in accidents was 130 against 151 last year, a 13.9 per cent decline. Of these, 112 were males and 18 females.


There was a two per cent increase in the number of injured to 1,922 until July 2017 as against 1,885 in the same period of 2016. Among the injured were 1,407 Omanis as against 1,418 in 2016. A total of 515 expats were injured as against 467 last year.


Fifty-four per cent of accidents occurred during the day.


Among the governorates, Muscat saw most accidents at 30.8 per cent, followed by South Al Batinah (13.9 per cent), Dhofar (11.7 per cent) and North Al Batinah (8.6 per cent). The rate of accidents in the rest of the governorates came to 35 per cent.


Vehicle registrations saw a 23.4 per cent decline until the end of July. The total number of vehicles registered during the period stood at 47,417 compared with 61,904 during the same period last year.


A total of 35,788 private vehicles were registered as against 46,58 last year, a 22.3 per cent dip. The number of commercial vehicles registered declined 35.1 per cent to 8,158 from 12,565 last year, while rental vehicles registered increased 18.7 per cent to 2,659 compared with 2,240 in the same period last year. The number of taxis registered declined 30.1 per cent to 285,408, while the number of motorcycles registered dropped 10.4 per cent to 380,424.


Only 39 diplomatic vehicles were registered this year compared with 49 during the same period last year, a 20.4 per cent decline. The number of tractors registered declined 64.5 per cent to 11 until the end of July compared with 31 during the corresponding period last year. The number of driving school vehicles registered declined 24.8 per cent to 97 compared with 129 last year.


There were 1,413,956 vehicles on the Sultanate’s roads at the end of July 2017. — ONA
