MUSCAT, MAY 23 - The Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulances (PACDA) said that effective measures are in place to combat any adversities in the wake of the storm Mekunu’s predicted landfall on Thursday. Lt Gen Hassan bin Mohsin al Shraiqi, Inspector General of Police and Customs and Chairman of the National Civil Defence Commission, convened an emergency meeting of all forces and parties concerned and directed them to support and engage response operations in Dhofar and central governorates.

A high level meeting of the PACDA Sub-Committee was held under the presidency of Brigadier General Mohammed bin Salem Rafe’t who is also the chairman of the sub-committee where elaborate arrangements against Mekunu impact were discussed.

A 24-hour rescue operations and hazard monitoring cell is in operation in Dhofar to assess updates and act accordingly. Besides that, the Hallaniyat Islands has been evacuated and relocated the people to a safer place.

A PACDA spokesperson said that various precautions need

to be observed when storms, floods, or rain happen. Both citizens and residents have been urged to comply with the PACDA instructions should there be a need of evacuation and leave the area immediately after switching off the gas, water and power supplies.

Likewise, one should leave the area when the alert comes while he/she is driving, just in case the road is blocked by floods or falling objects.

All are advised to make sure that they know the emergency shelters and aid such as food, rescue shelter and medical services.

People in Dhofar Governorate have been asked to avoid standing near street lights and power posts, and beware of loose cables. Do not try to cross valley watercourses, even if the water level is low.

“It’s better to stay at home and do not go out unless it’s really necessary and avoid going towards the sea until the period announced in the warning is over and an ‘All-Clear notification’ is issued by the competent authorities,” the PACDA representative said.

The PACDA emergency number is 9999 and one can get in touch with this hotline number when necessary.
