MUSCAT: Sohar International School started a 10-week project to make the students aware of recycling. Over these weeks, students will learn about waste management through pilot programmes, evaluations and implementing ways to promote recycling.

Students have taken the responsibility of making the school a Green Community.

This project is the brainchild of the school’s Entrepreneurship Coordinator Divan Koch. He will be coordinating the project with the support of the Secondary School staff. The project is part of the schools Entrepreneurship Programme. The project will focus mainly on paper and plastic recycling. Most of the plastic bags that we use in Oman are not biodegradable.

He believes that educating the students on recycling will reap positive consequences. “The change is slow but as soon as we educate the younger generation and change their mindset, the sooner the world will hopefully be a more environmentally friendly and healthy place,” he commented. This makes Sohar International the first school in Oman to start the process of ‘going green ’. The SIS community strongly believes that one stride by the school can bring significant changes to the environment.

In order to achieve their goal, SIS joined forces with the Waste Management Company. Waste Management Company has already donated recycling bins and are providing their complete service to the school free of charge. Recycling is a worldwide problem and Oman is not an exceptional case.

“There is not much recycling done in this country in the sense of 100℅ recycling. Recycling should start from your own home. The more you reduce the paper, the more you reduce the waste,” suggested Omar El Homsi, the Managing Director of the Waste Management Company in Oman. His key solid waste management policy is to motive children to recycle through various competitions and school activities.

Let us apply the motto of ‘reduce, reuse and recycle strategy’ to build a greener tomorrow.
