Quran contest winners honoured

SUHAR, Dec 25 - Assigned by His Majesty, Shaikh Abdullah bin Mohammed al Salmy, Minister of Endowments and Religious Affairs, on Monday presided over the award ceremony of the 27th edition of Sultan Qaboos Holy Quran Competition at the Sultan Qaboos Mosque in the Wilayat of Suhar. The competition, held under the orders of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos, is supervised by the Sultan Qaboos Center for Culture and Science. It was also attended by Sheikh Mohanna bin Saif al Lamki Governor of North Batinah, members of Council of State and Excellencies members of Shura Council and governors, directors of government institutions and the elders.


Habib bin Mohammed al Riyami, Secretary-General, Sultan Qaboos Center for Culture and Science, in his speech, said the number of contestants had increased to 2,156 in 2016. Al Riyami advised all participants and winners to “keep the book of God to continue to adhere to what they had memorised from the book”. Three of the contestants recited some Quranic verses, while a video showed how the competition had evolved since its inception. At the end of the ceremony, Shaikh Al Salmy honored the winners of the competition as well as participants with special needs, government institutions and private centres that prepared the contestants.
