By Siham Al Saidi — When Leonardo da Vinci was once asked why he paints, the master artist, one of the world’s greatest painters, responded, “Painting is a poetry that is seen rather than felt, and poetry is painting that is felt rather than seen.”

And true even today, a picture that is painted is indeed like a poem without words.

About 200 innovative and remarkable paintings, modern and traditional crafts and formation arts using different medium and materials were exhibited at Safiya bint Abdulmutalib School, one of the Sultanate’s innovative secondary schools.

The exhibition which ran for a week was attended and graced by the presence of not only art lovers in the governorate but by personnel and staff of the Directorate of Education in Al Batinah north and the school’s parents’ council.

The works on display reflected Oman’s heritage and culture showcasing not only the country’s natural formation but its fauna as well like camels and horses. Most of the painters showcase their passion for lifestyle.

Besides the artists’ focus on real life, several works were surrealist and abstract. There were also a few portraits and landscapes pieces and many were done with oil, acrylic, and pastel colours. Metal, leather crafts and clay formations were also employed by the participating artists.

With imagination setting the limit, some of the art pieces were also reinterpretation of popular and famous paintings.

Many of the visitors were totally impressed with the talent of the young ladies who participated on the exhibition.

One of the fathers said that he was really surprised of the talent his daughter, Fatma, had. He thanked the brilliant teachers who were working hard to equip the young, ambitious students with the knowledge and skills that enable them to share their passion with others in a very creative way.

The school’s headmistress, Aseela Al Hosni, said that the students really did well and have shown that they are capable of great achievements.

“It is not a matter of creating something, it is a space for relieving stress, enhancing creativity, developing problem solving skills and building leadership,” Al Hosni said when asked about the role of the school in the creative growth of the students.

Another great artist, Pablo Picasso, once said, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.”

By supporting its students through the exhibition, Safiya bint Abdulmutalib School had ensured the continuation of the passion for the arts of their students.
