Private sector to fund 93pc of fisheries projects

MUSCAT: The private sector has expressed its willingness to finance the initiatives and projects being proposed by the fisheries’ labs including processing and export, aquaculture and catch.


Speaking on the occasion of the conclusion of the fisheries’ labs, conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, in collaboration with Tanfeedh Implementation Support and Follow-up Unit, Dr Hamad bin Said al Oufi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, said the financing by the private sector will be to the tune of 93 per cent (around RO 1 billion), keeping government share at 7 per cent which will be in the form of facilitating procedures and infrastructure.


Dr Al Oufi said that the fisheries sector is one of the promising ones in enhancing the economic diversification due to its promising assets as a renewable resource and its ability to increase its contribution to food security and provide employment for citizens, as well as boost its contribution to GDP.


He said that the labs came up with more than 90 initiatives and projects, covering three activities which were discussed in the labs. — ONA
