Tokyo: Former Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou is set to join Yokohama F Marinos as head coach for the upcoming J-League season, the Japanese club announced on Tuesday.

The 52-year-old, who recently guided the Australian side to the World Cup with a play-off win over Honduras, resigned from his national team role on November 21 saying it was “all-encompassing.”

Before quitting the job, he had expressed frustration that he didn’t get the “week to week adrenalin” of coaching in a league.

“I am excited to be moving to Japan and returning to club football,” Postecoglou said in a statement on the club’s website on Tuesday.

“Coaching [Yokohama F Marinos] will be a great challenge and I am very much looking forward to working with the club’s players, and young players in particular, to achieve success.”

Before then, Postecoglou will reportedly spend time at Manchester City in January, shadowing Pep Guardiola, according to Australian news agency Australian Associated Press.

Yokohama is part owned by the City Football Group, which also owns the star-studded Premier League side. The Marinos, who finished fifth in this year’s J-League competition, start their new season at the end of February.

The team’s president Koichiro Furukawa said that he was confident that Postecoglou was “the perfect choice to take us forward.”
