GROWTH RATE: 9 OMANIS, 20 EXPATRIATES EACH HOUR


MUSCAT: The Sultanate’s population rose 1.1 million from 2011 to 2016 to reach 4.4 million in the middle of 2016. The Population Bulletin released by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) says the Omani population grew 21 per cent and that of expatriates 55 per cent. Omani males constituted 50.5 per cent and females 49.5 per cent of total Omani population. Children and youth under 29 years old accounted for 65 per cent of Omani population, constituting the largest population group. The sex ratio among adults aged 65 and over was 98 males to 100 females; in the 15 to 64 age group, it was 101 males to 100 females.


The dependency ratio for working age Omanis was 68 per 100. Child dependency ratio for Omani children was 61 per 100 of working age and elderly dependency ratio for Omanis 7 per 100 of working age. Among expatriates, the age dependency ratio was 5.2 for each 100 of working age. Child dependency ratio was 4.7 for each 100 of working age. Elderly dependency ratio is almost zero. Statistics reveal the Sultanate’s population was rising by nine Omanis against 20 expatriates each hour. Males make up 65 per cent of the total population.


Omani males make up 50.5 per cent of total Omani population and male expatriates 84 per cent of total expatriate population. The sex ratio among expatriates stands at 510 males for every 100 females against 102 males for every 100 females among Omanis. Expatriates in the working group (15 to 64) make up 95 per cent of the total expatriate population. Elderly expatriates constitute only 0.4 per cent, while the age group 25 to 34 years old makes up 47 per cent of the overall expatriate population. Nationality-wise, Indians make up 39 per cent of total expatriates, followed by Bangladeshis who constitute 34 per cent and Pakistanis 13 per cent.
