Minister of Transport and Communications Dr Ahmed al Futaisi on Tuesday visited Sohar Port and reviewed the work under way at the container terminal managed by Oman International Container Terminal Company and the general cargo terminal managed by C Steinweg Oman.

The ministry said the introduction of high technology in the container terminal will facilitate operations in a way that satisfies all the stakeholders.

Plans are on to expand the capacity of the bulk material handling terminal to 10 million tonnes.

Dr Al Futaisi said these projects are important as they have the potential to turn Oman into a regional hub for logistics services and investment.

He said work is under way to integrate logistics services and facilities with participation from both private and public sectors, which will improve the Sultanate’s competitiveness ranking.

He said Sohar Port has played a key role in recent years by keeping pace with modern developments in the logistics services sector.

Dr Al Futaisi affirmed that the ministry is complementing the linkage of logistic services and facilities as well as joining the efforts of the public and private sectors to boost the competitiveness of the port.

He added that the port has seen an excellent and pivotal performance during the previous period in line with the developments taking place in the region and in meeting the demand for new shipping lines with the rapid growth being witnessed in the logistic sector.

The minister praised the pre-customs clearance services currently being tested and said the system allows speedy exchange of detailed information of goods prior to their arrival at the port thus enabling the port operators to easily plan the process of goods handling and customs clearing while at the same time cutting cost and saving time.

The Sohar Port has handled 226,000 containers over the past three months, and achieved a gradual increase in shipping and navigational movement.
