Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) has staged “Omani Translators Forum”, bringing together professional translators from various organisations to discuss best practice and debate themes relevant to their profession.

The event was held at the Golden Tulip Hotel at Seeb under the auspices of Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed al Saeedi, Minister of Health.

The theme of the forum, which follows an inaugural event last September, was book translation and there were six presentation papers on different topics related to the subject.

The main speakers were prominent poet Hassan al Matrushi, who related his experience of translating two books and Sohar College of Applied Sciences’ Instructor Ahmed al Mueini, author of the award-winning blog “More Than One Life” and founder of the recently opened Rawazin Bookshop in Al Khoudh.

Other speakers included Mohammed al Hijri, Head of Translation at the Public Prosecution Office, Abdullah al Ajmi, Senior Translator at the Sultan Qaboos Higher Centre for Culture and Science, and Sheikha al Jassasi, Translation Specialist at the Information Technology Authority.

Attendees came from a variety of organisations and numbered translation professionals and enthusiasts, students from Sultan Qaboos, Suhar and Nizwa Universities, distinguished writers and chairmen of cultural institutions such as the Literary Forum, Omani Society for Writers and Literati and Ghasham House for Publishing and Translation.

The PDO Translation team, which has established a leading reputation for its work on Arabic and English texts, staged the event as part of its continued endeavours to build a centre of excellence for translation services and skills in the Sultanate.

PDO’s Head of Translation Services Saleh al Alawi said, “We staged a similar event last year and wanted to build on its success. One of the key aims of the forum was to empower young Omani translators and offer an opportunity to

share knowledge, connect and network with other translators in the country.
