Pak Falcons beat Saudi Strikers to lift hockey cup

MUSCAT: The thrill and fun of the third edition of Gulf Hockey Cup came to an end at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher when the local team Pak Falcons beat Saudi Strikers 2-1 in a tense final.


With international players like Amaad Bhatt and Faizan of Pakistan and the present Oman coach Tahir Zaman in the side, Pak Falcons had a wonderful run in the tournament which ended in lifting the trophy.


Saudi strikers had no clue of the opponents, but with two great Pakistan international players in the squad, Ali Shan and Aboobaker, Saudi Strickers put out a good show.


In the semifinal, Pak Falcons beat Qatar Wanders by 1-0 and Saudi Strikers beat Young Stars Bahrain 7-1.


The tournament, organised by United Sports Club in association with Oman Hockey Association had drawn 12 teams. There was good crowd present in the stadium in a most electrifying atmosphere which lasted for two days.


Captain Talib al Wahaibi, Chairman of Oman Hockey Association, and PV Sirajuddin, general secretary of UTSC, inaugurated the tournament on Friday. In his speech, Talib said: “I am glad that UTSC is conducting such an event. The OHA is always with you to support in every aspect to promote the game of hockey.”


The tournament attracted more than thousand family crowds on both days and fun games was also arranged at the venue along with DJ music and sports quiz and spot prizes much to the delight to the crowd.


The live commentary of Salih Thacher added more spice to the event. Sharzina Raffi of UTSC anchored the prize distribution ceremony. “This tournament is huge success for UTSC. We will bring more teams in our next edition,” said a delighted Hashir Ponnmanichi, Chairman of UTSC Oman wing.


Twelve teams took part in the tournament and in the quarterfinals Qatar Wanderers beat Muscat Oranges by 3-0. Defending champions Team Coorg with good crowd support went down to Saudi Strikers 2-1, host team UTSC lost to Pak Falcons 3-2 in the penalty shoot-out and Young Stars Bahrain beat local team Al Salam Sports Club by 4-2.


The tournament attracted many international players like Yuvaraj Walmiki and Anup Walmiki of India, Ali Shan, Faizan, Amaad Bhatt and Aboobaker of Pakistan.


The best goal keeper award was given to Ghassan of Team Coorg, the best defender award was presented to Qaiser of Saudi Strikers, Savio of Qatar Wanderers became the top-scorer of the tournament and the player of the tournament was won by Amaad Bhat of Pak Falcons.


The player of the match in the first semifinal went to Ammad Bhaat and Aboobacker captured the player of the match in the second semifinal.


However in the final, the man of the match award was granted to Oman coach Tahir Zaman, who guided his team Pak Falcons to glory in the end. The fair play award was presented to OHA red team.
