PACDA: Carelessness, faulty wiring key reasons for fires

Carelessness and faulty electric equipment are the key reasons behind fire mishaps, said the Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulances (PACDA), which has urged people to prevent fires in all possible ways.

With the onset of summer, incidents of fire are on the rise. Rising mercury levels is the trigger in most fire incidents.

“Most of the fires at homes or commercial buildings are preventable. Carelessness or reckless actions are to blame for major fire tragedies,” said a senior PACDA official.

Speaking about the recent fire incidents, he said a safe way of disposing waste and cigarette butts, proper maintenance of vehicles, electrical lines, gadgets and other household appliances can save many lives and properties.

“A little care and maintenance will save your life and that of others,” he said.

The main reason behind fire mishaps at homes, workplaces and vehicles is the faulty wiring, including older electrical systems with poor circuits as well as loose wires and overloaded plugs. “Keeping flammable materials close to the fire can be disastrous.”

In order to ensure industrial safety, the management must make sure staff members are well trained in emergency management.

Overheating of pots and pans, keeping combustible materials such as newspaper, paper towels and glass too close to burners and ignoring maintenance of heating equipment are “villains” when it comes to domestic fires.

“Get your electric equipment, air-conditioners and furnaces checked by a professional from time to time. Do not use faulty equipment as this not only increases electricity bills, but also puts your family’s life in danger.”

His advice: Unplug electrical appliances at the end of the day or when you are out of the home and take precautions while handling candles. Blow them out when you leave.

PACDA plans to hold a safety awareness programme for both citizens and expatriates in the coming days.
