OTF Techween launches tech start-ups in pre-seed stage

Techween, one of the investment programme of the Oman Technology Fund (OTF), launched its first specialised cohort of tech start-ups in their pre-seed stage at Knowledge Oasis, Muscat, yesterday


Present at the launch ceremony were of Sultan Hamdoun al Harthi, Chancellor of the secretariat of the Supreme Council for Planning and Omantel Chairman; Talal Sulaiman al Rahbi, Deputy-Chairman of the Supreme Council for Planning and OTF Chairman, Yousef Ali al Harthi, CEO — OTF, and other members of OTF’s board of directors.


Yousef al Harthi stated that launching Techween programme is one of OTF plans to develop a suitable environment for the tech start-ups in a way that helps in determining the adequacy of the product with the market. Other than offering access to services and co-working spaces, the programme provides financial investment and continuing training. It also introduces local and international experiences in order to qualify companies and develop their tech projects.


Techween programme CEO, Maha Mohammed al Balushi stated: “The concept of launching this programme is to provide a proper work environment that will encourage businesses to develop and propagate regionally and globally.”


She added, “those tech start-ups supported and trained by the programme will, hopefully, be an addition to the market as they work to be qualified, competent and highly productive tech entrepreneurs.”


Maha noted that launching the programme in this pre-seed stage form, which is the first-of-its-kind in Oman, reinforces other OTF programmes work in supporting tech ideas and make them adequate for the market. Techween programme manager, Mohammed Ahmed al Rasbi, stated that it will be a place where tech start-ups are trained and qualified through guiding and mentoring approaches in both business and tech fields. The programme process comes in cooperation with NDRC, Ireland covering areas related to product development and investors attraction.


Techween aims at supporting the stage of acquainting the product with the market and ascertaining the economic feasibility.


OTF is a specialist fund in investing in start-ups and innovative and creative ideas in IT sector in Oman and the MENA region. It runs three investment programmes; Techween PreSeed, Wadi Accelerator and Jasoor Ventures).
