By Conrad Prabhu — MUSCAT: FEB 12 - Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP), the sole procurer of all new power generation and water desalination capacity in the Sultanate, is inviting qualified consultants to bid for its contract to provide supervisory and project management services linked to the development of two new Independent Water Projects (IWPs) planned in the Sharqiyah South and Dhofar Governorates of the Sultanate. Four consortiums led by prominent international developers are bidding for a license to develop the IWPs at Sur in Sharqiyah South Governorate and in Salalah in Dhofar Governorate.  Total investments are estimated at over RO 105 million.

The four pre-qualified applicants that have submitted the final bids comprise consortiums led by JGC, GS Inima, ACWA, and Tedagua. The successful bidder/bidders will implement the two projects on a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) basis under the terms of Water Purchase Agreements (WPA) reached with OPWP. Ahead of the award of a license to the successful bidder for the IWPs, the state-run procurer — a wholly owned subsidiary of The Nama Group — is preparing to appoint one or more consultants to provide “project management and technical consultancy services” during the construction, commissioning and testing of the Salalah and Sharqiyah Independent Water Projects.

The scope of the projects includes the design, construction, ownership, financing, operation and maintenance of high efficiency desalination facilities of a total of 180,000 m3 per day (39.6 million gallon per day) of potable water output. The plants are slated to enter into commercial operation in the third quarter of 2019 and second quarter of 2020 respectively.
