MUSCAT: The Planning and Follow-up Committee of Oman Olympic Committee (OOC) discussed Oman’s participation in the first World Beach Games scheduled to be held in the city of San Diego, United States, in October next year. The committee held its seventh meeting this year under the chairmanship of Mohsin bin Hamad al Masroori, Committee Vice-Chairman. The participation in the World Beach Games comes within the context of the basic objectives for 2019 and in implementation of the plan approved by the OOC Board of Directors for team preparation during the period leading up to Olympic Games 2020 and 2024.

The committee raised its recommendation to the OOC Board for approval of the participation in six events, namely football, volleyball, basketball, swimming, sailing and volleyball taking into consideration that the participation will be through the continental qualifiers, world championships or international ranking. The committee also reviewed the ongoing preparations for participation in the qualifying championships and tournaments for Tokyo Olympic Games 2020. It will continue the coordination with the sports associations and technical committees for organisational and technical actions to be taken for better participation of Oman contingents in such events.

The committee also discussed the programme of subsidies provided to Omani athletes by the International Olympic Committee. It further evaluated the situation with regard to the Olympic Games and identification of talented athletes and their preparation for the Olympic Games 2024.
