Omantel engineer gets Australian scholarship to study space science

By Business Reporter — MUSCAT: Jan 28 - Omantel employee Eng Bahiah al Shoaibi has received a scholarship from Australia’s International Space University (ISU) after competing with a number of international candidates. Bahiah, who is the only Omani and Arab woman to attend this five-week programme, has been passionate about space science since childhood. She started reading books on space science when she was a student then she got a bachelor degree in communications. Bahiah then went on to obtain a Master’s degree in Mobile Telecommunication and Satellites Technology from the United Kingdom. She is currently working in Omantel as a Telecommunication Project Engineer.


During her tenure at Omantel, Bahiah also participated in a number of local and international events. She is credited with inventing a device to reduce the impact of sunlight on the frequencies of communication systems. This invention got the first place in Omantel Talents Competition for Innovation in 2012. She also won first place in the same competition in the 2015 edition. “I am very proud of Omantel’s support as I got the opportunity to participate in this programme.  There will be a number of specialised people from different parts of the world participating in this prestigious programme.  It will provide an excellent opportunity to enhance our knowledge and exchange ideas and experiences. I will do my best to share and use the knowledge I get to serve my country,” she said.
