Oman’s beach volleyball team progress in Arab University Games

Aghadeer, April 21 - Oman’s national volleyball university team began its participation in the second edition of the Arab University Games which is held in Aghadeer city in Morocco on April 23.


Oman’s beach volleyball university team sealed their qualification to the next round from Group A. They defeated Palestine and Kuwait 2-0 accordingly. Oman will take on Morocco university team in the last match of Group A. The match will decide the group winners and Oman are keen to take that spot.


Faisal al Subhi and Abdulrahman al Shizawi represent Oman’s beach volleyball team coached by Hassan al Balushi. Oman beach volleyball team was the defending champion in the Games.


“We are keen to lift the title again as Oman team is defending champion. Abdulrahman al Shizawi is youngster member in the team along with professional player Faisal al Subhi. I am optimistic to get a medal for the Sultanate in volleyball,” Hassan al Balushi, head coach of Oman beach volleyball team, said.


“This is an essential participation for Oman as we are preparing for the International University Games in Germany next July,” Al Balushi added.

The Omani cross country team completed its preparation to take part in the Arabian Games. The team won the bronze medal last year. They concluded their participation in the International University Tournament in Switzerland last month. Oman athletes performed well in Switzerland also gaining good experience.


Opening ceremony


The second edition of Arab University Games kicked off at the Aghadeer city in Morocco under the auspices of Dr Said al Hassani, Chairman of Arab University Sports Association, in presence of top dignitaries and representative of participated teams. More than 70 players from 8 countries namely: UAE, Algeria, Kuwait, Iraq, Palestine, Egypt, Oman and Morocco are participating in the Arab University Games in three sports: football, beach volleyball and athletics. The tournament is organised by the Arab University Sports Association and will end on April 23. The opening ceremony was a simple one. Moroccan folklore troupes staged traditional arts and music band played symphonies.


Dr Salim al Araimi, Chairman of Oman University Sports Committee and Vice-Chairman for Arab University Sports Association, participated in the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Arab University Sports Association. AGM discussed and reviewed several topics.
