PACA issues guidelines for tsunami simulation in Barka

Muscat: Oman will take part in the Indian Ocean Wave 18 on September 4, which is being organised by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC).


According to official sources in Public Authority of Civil Authority (PACA), public will be allowed to watch the exercises between September 8am and 5pm, subject to ROP and PACDA guidelines.


Public Authority for Civil Defense (PACDA) is also taking place in the exercise.


A part of the Sawadi area in Barka in South Batinah will be evacuated to raise awareness of the risks of the tsunami and enhance the preparedness for these condition at the community level. Guidelines to be followed are



  1. A test message will be sent by phone with the necessary action

  2. At the time of exercise if you are at sea in a boat, go to the deep water.

  3. Take shelter from the earthquake and then leave the house.

  4. Make sure family members are safe and speed up the evacuation. Take care of children and elderly.

  5. Go to the nearest assembly point

  6. Make sure family members are safe at the assembly point

  7. Follow the evacuation route as per guidelines.

  8. If you find obstacles on the way, look for the alternative route.

  9. In case a family member is injured, contact the civil defence and the allocated exercise clinic.


 


The exercise, held every two years and attended by all countries bordering the Indian Ocean, will simulate a 9.0 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Iran, that will generate simulated tsunami waves traveling across the Indian Ocean basin towards the coast of the Sultanate in less than half an hour.


The estimated height of the simulated wave will about 12 metres, flooding the beaches at 6am on September 4.


The exercise is held every two years and is attended by all countries bordering the Indian Ocean. It is activated by three countries - India, Indonesia and Australia.


The Sultanate has previously participated in this exercise to test its readiness with tsunami risks.


The main objectives of the Indian Ocean Wave 18  are:




1. To confirm the preparedness and readiness of the Sultanate to face the risks of tsunami



2. Assess and improve the effectiveness of the Indian Ocean tsunami warning and early warning system


3. Test communication and standard operating procedures


4. Strengthen emergency preparedness


5. Raise community awareness of tsunami risks and enhance preparedness


6. Self-evacuation of a villager from the dangers of the tsunami.
