Oman strives for peace, security and tolerance

GENEVA: The Sultanate is committed to safe and peaceful coexistence and respect of internal law for human rights, as well as the humanitarian international law, said Abdullah bin Nasser al Rahbi, the Sultanate’s Permanent Representative to the UN Office and Other International Organizations in Geneva at the 34th session of the High Level Human Rights Council, held at UN Office in Geneva from February 27th to March 24th 2017.


He affirmed that the Sultanate firmly believes in laying the pillars of peace, security and tolerance. It also calls for solving all regional disputes through peaceful means as this will help states achieve stability, security and growth for their peoples. These are perquisites for the protection and enhancement of human rights. He pointed out that the Sultanate has been a leader in calling on all countries of the world and civilised people to prevent the tragic events facing humans in many countries round the world. The Sultanate has also been a leader in mediating to free a number of hostages of different nationalities at the dispute areas.


The approach emanates from the Sultanate’s firm belief that peace is a right for all peoples and humans. He pointed out that the Sultanate has made steady strides in the human rights files and that the Basic Law of the State provided guarantees for the protection of human rights. He added that the Sultanate is going ahead to complete joining the human rights related international charters namely the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the United Nations Convention Against Torture and The International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance (ICPPED).


He pointed out that Prince Zeid Ra’ad al Hussein, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, who has visited the Sultanate recently to review the progress made in the Sultanate in general and in human rights field in particular, hailed the pivotal role played by the Sultanate in promoting peace and security of the region. He added that the Sultanate is determined to continue its efforts to ensure living with dignity for everyone. He also praised the positive outcomes of the positive dialogue he had with all stakeholders. — ONA
