Muscat: Oman Sail kicked off the 2017 Summer Sailing Camp in three sailing schools, Al Mouj Muscat, Sur and Al Musannah.
An overwhelmingly positive feedback from parents and children last year has led to more children being given the opportunity to have fun on the water, learn the basics of sailing, the benefits of physical activity and a healthy lifestyle, and learn valuable transferrable life skills through sport, as well as training towards achieving a Level 1 Sailing Certificate.
Running until August 10, the camp is dedicated to children of parents living in Al Mouj Muscat as well as Omantel staff members, with sessions starting each Sunday and running through until Thursday.
Sixteen children aged 8-12 years old will sail per week in two sessions — 9.30 am - 12.30 pm, and at 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm. Each session will start with team building activities in the gym or classroom before spending two hours sailing on the water and conclude with students returning the equipment and taking part in a short question and answer period.
The focus is fun but also on teaching children the responsibility of looking after equipment and learning new skills through physical activity.
Oman Sail Instructors will be on the lookout for promising Omani sailors to join the Omantel Youth Sailing Programme, which has seen some of the nation’s youth sailors compete internationally and claim the title as the best young sailors in the GCC. Mohammed bin Hassan al Lawati, Event Manager at Omantel said, “As part of our ongoing promise to invest in the future of Oman’s youth through sport, we are delighted to bring Summer Sailing Camps to communities in Muscat, Al Musannah and Sur during the school holidays. Last year was such a huge success that we hope the new and improved camp this year will be even better.
