Oman open with Yemen match in Asian U-16 championship

MUSCAT, Sept 19 - Oman national under-16 football team will commence its campaign at AFC U-16 Asian Cup in Malaysia on Friday. The Red warriors will take on Yemen in their first match at Pitaling Gaya Stadium. The match will kick off at 12:30 (Oman Time). In same group, Korea DPR will take on Jordan at same venue on Friday. The match will kick off at 4:45 pm (Oman Time). The AFC U-16 championship will open on Thursday with the match between hosts Malaysia and Tajikistan at the National Stadium in Phuket. In the second match, Japan take on Thailand at Umm arena.


The Sultanate team had participated in nine editions of AFC U-16 Asian Cup and were champions in 1996 and 2000 editions. In Malaysia, the same passion drives the team to reach the top knock-out stages. Yaqoob al Sabahi’s line-up includes some top players namely Qusai al Jaradi, Tariq al Mashari, Al Azhar al Balushi, Dawood al Jabri. Oman completed their preparation for the Asian Cup with two friendly matches during their last camp in Malaysia. In the first match, Oman were held to a 3-3 draw with Indonesia while in second match, Yaqoob al Sabahi’s boys suffered a 5-1 loss against Australia.
