MUSCAT: The Sultanate represented by Oman Olympic Committee (OOC) will host in Muscat for two days the meetings of the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (ICAS). The 48th ICAS meetings will be opened by Shaikh Saad bin Mohammed al Saadi, Minister of Sports Affairs, at the Grand Hyatt Hotel Muscat, on October 26 in the presence of Shaikh Khalid bin Mohammed al Zubair, OOC Chairman.

The meetings will be attended by 30 ICAS participants and a number of prominent sports personalities, foremost of whom are Shaikh Ahmad al Fahad al Sabah, President of Olympic Council or Asia (OCA) and President of Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC); John Coates, President of Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and member of International Olympic Committee (IOC); Dr Nabil al Arabi, CAS member; Husain al Musallam, OCA Director General; Mathieu Reeb, CAS Secretary General and a number of IOC members such as Richard Pound, Tricia Smith and Patrick Baumann.

These meetings provide a favourable opportunity for OOC to establish distinguished relations with various international sports organisations and establishments to the benefit of Omani sport.

The Sultanate was selected by the OCA as the first country in the region to host these meetings in recognition of its positive role and effective participation in various meetings, conferences, events and activities organised by the IOC and OCA.

Based in Lausanne, Switzerland, and set up in 1984, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is an international quasi-judicial organisation having jurisdiction to resolve sports-related disputes. It has two other courts, one in New York, United States, and the other in Sidney in Australia in addition to an interim court being set up in the host cities of the Olympic Games. The idea behind its establishment is focused on creating a judicial body for direct and indirect settlement of sport-related issues as well as a specialised authority capable of addressing and deciding upon the international sports disputes through a flexible, expeditious and inexpensive approach.
