Muscat, June 26 -

Citizens and expatriates across the Sultanate marked Eid al Fitr as they stood in high spirits in front of the Almighty for special prayers in the morning. This was followed by exchange of wishes while mosques resonated with Thakbeer which proclaimed “Allah is Great”.

Imams and other religious scholars led Eid prayers in various mosques and specially arranged Eid Garhs (special gatherings for Eid prayers), after which special sermons were conducted.

Scholars urged for unity and peace, harmony and camaraderie in their speeches after the prayers.

Celebrations were followed by the distribution of Omani halwa and eidiya (gifts for children) and exchange of Eid messages.

From early morning, just after the fajr prayers, people started gathering at mosques to evoke supplications and say ‘takbir’, which underlines the Islamic belief of monotheism.

This was followed by the pre-sunrise communal prayer, Salat al Eid, and in wishing Allah’s mercy and blessings and greeting each other.

In some areas of the capital, people were seen distributing bowls of ‘sheer-korma’, a special Eid sweet preparation made from milk, vermicelli, dates, assorted dry fruits and saffron, to passersby, thus completing the significance of ‘giving unconditionally’ in Islam.
