MUSCAT: Oman Global Logistics Group (OGLG) signed an MoU with International Road Transport Union (IRTU) for cooperation in the field of promoting goods and passengers’ transport. The MoU provides a platform for the Sultanate to join a number of international UN conventions on multi-model land transport and facilitate trade through streamlining the border controls for the exchange of goods. The MoU aims at keeping pace with the modern applications in this field, such as risk management, e-linkage for road transport and supply chain in the Sultanate.

The agreement was signed by Abdul Rahman bin Salim al Hatmi, CEO of the Group and Umberto de Pretto, Secretary-General of the IRTU in the presence of  Salim bin Mohammed al Nuaimi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, as well as a number of specialists at the Public Administration for Customs. OGLG CEO said that the MoU with IRTU comes in a bid to support the efforts done by the Group to enhance the performance of the logistics sector in the Sultanate in general and road transport in particular.

He added that the MoU focuses on two main issues related to increasing the level of organization of trucks in land transport in terms of safety, quality, cost and cross border transport in a bid to facilitate road transport among GCC states. The move is expected to increase the volume of trade exchange among GCC states and countries of the region. He pointed out that the Sultanate is expected to sign transboundary transport agreement with IRTU at the end of this year besides hosting the ITRU conference next year.

Tim David, Head of International Expansion at the IRTU, expressed happiness for working side by side with OGLG to assist in developing the Omani logistics sector. He said that IRTU believes that the development of the land transport services and improving the custom procedures in the Sultanate will provide the platform for addressing the bigger issues related to development of regional trade, sustainability and economic growth. — ONA
