Muscat, Jan 20 - The Outward Bound International World Conference in Oman came to an end recently with the participation of 120 delegates from 32 nations at the Rotana Sundus Hotel.
The conference included three days of workshops and discussions at Outward Bound Oman’s desert training centre in the Rimal al Sharqiya.
Senior staff from training centres from as far afield as Zimbabwe, Mexico, Hong Kong and New Zealand, joined by their colleagues from Outward Bound Oman, shared thoughts, ideas and best practice to ensure the organisation, now 78 years old, remains resilient, relevant and focused on delivering long-term outcomes that develop and inspire people of all ages and backgrounds.
Iain Peter, Executive Director of Outward Bound International, knows a thing or two about resilience, and the lessons that can be learned from stepping out of one’s comfort zone; in addition to climbing the north face of the Eiger, and ascents of Gasherbrum 2 (8,035m) and Choy You (8,201m). In 2007 Peter led an expedition that summited the highest peak on earth, Mount Everest. He expressed his thanks to the staff of Outward Bound Oman for hosting the 2019 conference, and said, “I have been reviewing the growth and operations of Outward Bound Oman for several years now, and it has been good to see Oman evolve into an active member of the global Outward Bound community. The keys to Oman’s rapid growth are clear to see — transparent and effective governance, a great outdoor landscape in which to run courses, and a government and private sector who work together with a common interest to shape and nurture the human capital of the nation.”
Outward Bound in Oman, the first Outward Bound centre in an Arabic speaking nation, celebrates 10 years of operations in 2019.
Established by the Ministry of Social Development, Outward Bound has grown rapidly in Oman, employing 33 full-time staff, and training more than 2,000 people in Oman each year, a number that will increase in the coming years thanks to the construction of three national training centres.
