MUSCAT: The Oman Film Society (OFS) will organise the Salim Bahwan Competition for short feature films during the period from January 27-29, which is part of the Muscat Festival 2018 in honour of the late actor Salim Bahwan for his active contributions in making films.

The competition aims at developing cinematic work in the Sultanate, encouraging and attracting Omani film-makers and developing their abilities, in addition to enabling young people to interact with film activities and relate them to social issues.

22 films submitted their applications to the competition, 18 films were accepted, and 4 films were rejected because they did not meet the conditions of the competition. The participating films varied in different themes, which dealt with issues related to children, social and youth issues, and silent films.

The films of the late Salim Bahwan will be screened and will be followed by discussion by a number of critics, and interested in cinema from inside and outside the Sultanate, including drama writer Ahmad al Azki, Qatari director Salim al Mansouri and director Anis al Habib.

Three prizes will be awarded, namely the Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards.

The Organising Committee has also made a number of awards: best photography, best screenplay, best actor and best director.

The Oman Film Society seeks to promote cinematic activities through film festivals, holding dialogues and critical sessions, and benefiting from international experiences, in order to enhance the cinematic image and creativity. — ONA
