SEOUL: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has announced the halt of nuclear and long-range missile tests, and a shut-down of his country’s atomic test site, the official Korea Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Saturday ahead of next week’s inter-Korean summit.

Kim declared that “a fresh climate of detente” was being created on the Korean peninsula since his declaration in January that his nuclear force had been completed.

Tests were no longer needed “given that the work for mounting nuclear warheads on ballistic rockets was finished,” he added.

The announcement did not include anything to suggest the state was willing to give up its existing nuclear arsenal, which Kim described as a “powerful treasured sword.”

US President Donald Trump said on Twitter the development was “very good news for North Korea and the world.” His tweet said it was “big progress” and said he looked forward to a summit between himself and Kim.
