The Education Council has granted approval for establishing a private university through the merger of three colleges: Caledonian College of Engineering, Oman Medical College and a pharmacology college.

The council, which held its third meeting of the year on Monday under the chairmanship of Sayyid Khalid bin Hilal al Busaidy, Minister of the Diwan of Royal Court and Chairman of the Council, instructed the Ministry of Higher Education for completing formalities for setting up the university.

At the beginning of the meeting, the chairman of the council expressed greetings for His Majesty the Sultan on the occasion of the New Hijra Year 1439. The council also discussed the recommendations of a seminar on ‘Education, Development Trends, Current and Future Job Opportunities in the Local Market’, which was organised by the Secretariat-General of the council in May.

The seminar was aimed at identifying international trends for the ‘fourth industrial revolution’ on education and labour market, the status of Oman’s economy, its future trends and its effects on education and employment.

The council issued instructions for taking necessary measures to implement the recommendations of the seminar. It also discussed the outcomes of a study conducted by The Research Council (TRC) in collaboration with a number of relevant organisations on the ‘reality and future of private higher education’ in the Sultanate.

The council instructed the relevant organisations to take necessary measures to implement the recommendations of the study. It discussed the applications of several private higher education institutions for restructuring their colleges.
