MUSCAT: The Indian Embassy in Oman has clarified that there are no reports of finding the bodies of any Indian fishermen on Omani coast following the tropical storm Ockhi that lashed the southern parts of India on November 30.

“There have been no sightings of bodies floating in Omani waters and we are in touch with the authorities,” the embassy said in a statement on Muscat said.

It may be noted that the government of a southern Indian state contacted authorities in Oman via India’s foreign ministry following reports that bodies were found in the sea near the Oman coast. The state government’s intervention came as many fishermen were still missing in the Arabian Sea following Ockhi.

“Besides writing to the Indian External Affairs Ministry, we have contacted the Indian ambassador in Oman twice regarding the matter,” the state Additional Chief Secretary (Revenue and Disaster Management), said. The authorities in Oman have alerted their Coast Guard and a search is on to locate the bodies,” he added.

It was on November 30 that Ockhi struck and left more than 70 fishermen from the state dead, while around 250 of them were yet to be traced.
