NIZWA, FEB 28 -

A seminar entitled ‘Who is responsible for immunodeficiency syndrome’ was held on Wednesday at the University of Nizwa.

The seminar was organised by Nizwa Hospital, represented by the Department of Health Education in collaboration with Nizwa University, under the patronage of Younis bin Ali bin Azzan al Mantheri, member of the Ash’shura Council representative of Izki. Dr Khalifa bin Hamad al Shaqsi, Director of Nizwa Hospital, in his welcome speech called upon the need to have a major impact in our awareness at all levels and let them know about the consequences of the disease. We wanted to show the people how the disease effects the disease to the society, at family level, to the person himself, and to the community at large.”

Shaikh Salim bin Ali al Numani, Lecturer and Mentoring Expert, Sultan Qaboos University, and Salim bin Ali al Kharousi, a nurse-in-charge of Aids in North Al Batinah Governorate, participated in the seminar.

Salim bin Ali al Kharousi spoke about the definition of health from a scientific point of view and pointed the importance of comprehensive examination after reaching the age of forty. He also explained that the government gave the opportunity to conduct tests as free for all by only giving them the ID card. He said that Aids is a virus that attacks the immune system and the virus breaks the immune system.

Al Kharousi added that between 1980 to 2016 there were over 71 million who are infected with the disease. Nowadays, any country in the world have one person with Aids. In Oman, the number of Aids patients is around 100-120 a year,” he added.

He said the first stage is entry of the virus in the human body which is discovered in the examination after 3 weeks to 3 months. The second stage is incubation of the virus from two to 15 years in which the immune system resists the virus.

The pre-Aids stage shows ulcers, symptoms and diseases because the immune system is weak. Finally, Aids is the fourth stage in which the patient becomes very weak.

The medicines used now reduces the virus and increases the immune system so that the person is not dangerous, Al Kharousi pointed out.
