NIZWA: The University of Nizwa has designed and built an eco-friendly house that can meet the social and functional requirements of the Omani family considering the environmental and the climatic conditions of the surrounding area. The house shade functions as an optical isolator thereby providing maximum privacy and protection from the sun heat. It also redirects the southerly wind to create an air current around the house and through the garden as well as providing a platform which is approximately three times the space of the house used for fitting solar panels atop it. In addition to electricity-generating solar panels, the house is equipped with a waste water recycling system and a desert air-conditioning unit designed in such a way as to provide a cool ambience. It is also equipped with solar water heating (SWH) which converts sunlight into heat for water heating using a solar thermal collector.
