March 12,  Mohammed bin Abdullah al Mahrouqi, Chairman of the General Authority for Electricity and Water (DIAM), visited Barka to oversee the challenges facing desalination companies in water production due to the presence of phytoplankton in seawater, also called the red tide phenomenon.

Led by experts from the company, the team meeting discussed the actions taken by the desalination plants operators to reduce the effect of phytoplankton (red tide) and measures to make up for the shortfall in the water produced from other Barka pumping stations.

With the new plant, equipped with technologies to remove the marine plankton, able to supply  water since evening of March 11.  It is hoped that the new plant will be able to increase the water supply over the next few days to compensate for the shortage due to the suspension of operations at other stations.

DIAM has called on residents in all governorates of the Sultanate to continue to rationalize water consumption.
