By Vinod Nair — MUSCAT: March 4 - Travellers using Dubai airport have been urged to follow new baggage rules that will be enforced from the coming week. As per the details available through a statement, the authorities at Dubai will enforce tighter rules targeting irregular shaped, oversized, and round bags. All bags will also be required to have a flat surface.

An official at Oman Wings said he is aware of the new rules but yet to get any official communication from the airline.

The new rules will go into effect starting March 8, at which point bags without flat surfaces will be rejected at check-in.

“The most technologically advanced systems can be disrupted by irregular shaped or oversized bags,” said an official in a state-

ment.

Bags that are round or do not have a flat surface of any kind are by far the largest source of baggage jams; these jams can shut down sections of our system, delay baggage delivery to the aircraft, and inconvenience our customers,” the official said.

The other rules are generally two pieces of baggage are allowed for international travel, with the total weight not exceeding 32kg.

Baggage larger than 90cm long, 75cm high and 60cm wide, or that does not have a single flat surface, will need to be checked in at the oversized baggage counter.

Passengers whose bags do not comply with the new rules will have the option to have their bags repacked in boxes for a fee, the official said.

Excess baggage must be repacked and fees apply. Avoid using cardboard boxes.

They need to be processed manually, which takes longer. And they’re not as durable, the company said on its website.

It may be noted that Oman Air passengers introduced a new baggage rule in January, which allowed one piece of baggage of up to 30kg; business and first class — one piece of baggage of up to 30kg plus one additional piece of baggage of up to 20kg.
