As a mark of effective surveillance and safety, a new air navigation radar was launched at Salalah Airport on Thursday. The radar is equipped with assistance facility in developing navigation services in the Omani airspace, especially in the southern air sector and the adjoining areas of Salalah Airport. This will contribute to increasing the efficiency and accuracy of air traffic control to ensure the highest level of security and safety.

Dr Mohammed bin Nasser bin Ali al Zaabi, Chief Executive Officer of the Public Authority for Civil Aviation (PACA), was present during the radar’s launch.

“The project is a milestone for civil aviation in Oman. The project includes technical surveillance areas, radars, workshops and a power supply unit. The radar tower is 40 metres high and is equipped with radar and navigational devices,” he said.

The radar station was built according to the latest specifications and technologies on 1,393-square-metre area. It consists of two radar systems — the primary three-dimensional radar, which scans the airspace and identifies the aircraft objects to 110 miles (200 km) from the radar centre. Secondly, the radar can monitor aircraft movement and identify them within a coverage area of 256 miles (about 475 km).

The station, thus, has been enhanced by an automatic surveillance device, a surveillance technology based on the identification of the aircraft to its location via satellite to be exposed later on radar screens every second. This new technology is the first of its kind in Oman to monitor Omani airspace.

The radar project is part of the infrastructure development projects in the aviation sector in general and the development of navigation services in particular. It is going to be hugely beneficial in the wake of rapid growth of air traffic in the region.
