New 34-kms stretch of Batinah Expressway opens

By Staff Reporter — MUSCAT: May 22 - The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC) on Monday opened a new 34km stretch of the Batinah Expressway project that extends from the Liwa interchange near the new police station till until Al Aqer interchange in Shinas. The road was opened in the presence of Salim Bin Mohammed al Nuaimi, undersecretary for land transport and other officials. With the opening of this section, a total of 115km has been opened for the public, including 45km from the first package, 18km from the second package and 18km from the sixth package. The stretches under the sixth and the first packages are opened completely for traffic.

Monday’s opening of the stretch under the fifth package included an 8km road with four lanes on each side, one wadi bridge, one underpass, two rest areas and 14 boxcluverts. Under the sixth package, 27km road with four lanes in each side, three main interchanges, four Wadi bridges, three underpasses, two truck weighing stations, 152 box culverts and a rest area. These segment is also equipped with traffic safety facilities such as iron fences, concrete barriers, signboards, road floor paintings and many others, in order to ensure having top traffic safety standards for motorists, Work is complete by 78 per cent on this package.

MoTC said the work is progressing on the construction of Batinah expressway, which begins at the end of Muscat Expressway in Barka till Khutmat Milahah in Shinas. Batinah Expressway project is considered one of the new developmental projects included within the eighth five year plan (2011-2015).
