National oil spill drill concludes

MUSCAT: Omran bin Mohammed al Kamzari, Director of Pollution Control at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs said in a press conference that the two-day National Oil Spill Drill ‘Nawras 2017’ concluded on Wednesday.


He added that the drill was organised by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs, in collaboration with Petroleum Development Oman (PDO).


The press conference was attended by Mohammed bin Salim al Toobi, Minister of Environment and Climate Affairs and Najeeb bin Ali al Rawas, Under-Secretary of the Ministry Environment and Climate Affairs, in addition to officials in the ministry and the Royal Oman Police (ROP).


Al Kamzari pointed out that the drill aimed to activate contingency plans of government and private agencies involved in combating oil spills and stand on their readiness to respond to the joint anti-pollution processes, as well as activating the responsibility of the authorities concerned with combating oil pollution process according to the national plan to combat oil spills in the Sultanate and assessing the extent of cooperation and response to regional and international organisations.


He added that government and private entities took part in the drill, in accordance with the national plan to combat oil pollution.


These participating entities were the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, the Ministry of Oil and Gas, the Ministry of Health, the Public Authority for Electricity and Water (PAEW), Muscat Municipality, the National Committee for Civil Defence (NCCD), the Royal Oman Police (ROP), represented by Operations and Coast Guard, Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulance (PACDA), Royal Air Force of Oman (RAFO), Royal Navy of Oman (RNO), Maritime Security Centre and Sultan Qaboos Port.
