National Occupation Standards launched for oil and gas sector

Muscat: Ministry of Manpower has launched the first phase of National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Oil and Gas sector, under the auspices of Salim al Aufi, Undersecretary of Ministry of Oil and Gas today.


NOS measures, which are benchmarked against the best practices worldwide, will be a predetermining factor for Omanis as well as expatriates who want o work in the oil and gas sector.


While for citizens, NOS will be a part of their curriculum which they will be taught using the apprenticeship programme and occupational standards and certified with an internationally recognised certification, expatriates who are coming into Oman to work will also be required to submit a proof that they meet all the requirements of the NOS standards.


NOS simply indicates that all employees in the oil and gas sector will be assessed locally to ensure that they actually meet the competency requirements to do the job and all Omanis and expatriates who undergo the NOS will be issued with a job certificate.


With the NOS certification, they are eligible to work in the particular discipline, including the electrical or mechanical or whatever the discipline is and that way, they can actually fair in the job market.
