National Ferries achieves 7 per cent annual growth

By Staff Reporter — MUSCAT: Jan 17 - A recent bulletin by National Ferries Company (NFC) carried over 220,859 passengers onboard its vessels in 2016 compared to 205,579 passengers in 2015, achieving an annual growth of seven per cent. The statistics also showed that 54,078 vehicles were carried by NFC during the same period compared to 52,771 vehicles in 2015, an increase of two per cent. On the other hand, the cargo traffic witnessed a significant increase and grew to 15,179 tonnes compared to 82,32 tonnes in 2015.


The company’s annual statistics for 2016 said that the company carried in the second half of last year around 120,988 passengers forming 55 per cent of the total number of passengers in 2016 in addition to 29,438 vehicles which form 54 per cent of the total number of vehicles as compared to 99,871 passengers and 24,640 vehicles in the first half of the year. The Shannah-Masirah route maintained its top position as 167,996 passengers were carried through this route forming 76 per cent of the total number of passengers achieving the highest occupancy rate of 46 per cent.


Around 48,828 vehicles have been carried through this route which account for 90 per cent of the total number of vehicles carried by the Company vessels in 2016. The Company’s market share  of the Shannah- Masirah route is 28 per cent of passengers and 31 per cent of the vehicles. This was achieved through 2,512 trips by the company’s vessels as opposed to 7,237 trips that were operated by the 12 vessels owned by citizens NFC annual statistical bulletin showed that 1,703 passengers used the company’s regional trips to the Iranian ports.
