Mwasalat ferries 4.5mn passengers in 2017, new technologies to be launched

Mwasalat ferried more than 4.5 million passengers during the period from January 1 to December 31, 2017 on all its Muscat in Muscat and inter-city routes, an increase of 21 per cent from 2016.


From the first half of this year, local buses are expected to have electronic tickets, bus tracking that allow the user to track the bus until it arrives and mobile Apps.


The buses carried on average 1,000 passengers per day, when which went up to 18,000 on Fridays.


Around 40 per cent of the passengers were Omanis during this period.


The Ruwi-Mabela route ferried more than 1.6 million passengers, followed by the Ruwi-Wadi Kabir (700,000), Ruwi-Amerat (600,000), Al-Khoud – Sultan Qaboos University – Burj al Sahwa (400,000, (Ruwi-Muttrah – Al Alam Palace(300,000), Ruwi – Wadi Adei (200,000) and Mabela- South Mabela (82, 000) passengers.


A total of 4.2 million passengers travelled on Muscat routes, while the total number of passengers who travelled to Dubai was 304,340.


Mwasalat signed an agreement for the supply of 98 new buses in October 2017, including 33 for inter-city routes and 65 for Muscat city services. This is in addition to the plans for the replacement of a number of long-distance buses.


This month, Mwasalat will get the first of its 33 new MAN buses, equipped with accident prevention systems such as the EBA and LGS, along with adaptive cruise control (ACC).


The new buses also have a radar device and cameras installed to determine the speed and distance between two vehicles on the bus. The new buses are expected to start operating in the first quarter of the current year.


With the arrival of new buses, new public transport lines will be operated inside and outside Muscat Governorate, especially Salalah and Sohar.


Mwasalat fully shifted to the electronic payment system for shipping services and long-haul travel tickets using debit and credit cards in all its offices.
