Musharaka Conference opens on theme, ‘Powering the Future’

MUSCAT, Sept 10 - Nama Group’s eagerly anticipated ‘Musharaka Conference 2017’ began at the headquarters of the Oman Electricity Transmission Company (OETC) on Sunday, with a number of international experts presenting on trends in renewables, sustainable energy solutions, smart grids, and so on. In attendance were board members of various Nama Group subsidiaries, CEOs, and members of ‘Ruwad’ representing a group of emerging leaders. The proceedings were live-streamed to enable Nama Group employees and interested stakeholders to watch in real time, as well as take part in the deliberations via the Internet.


“The conference theme, ‘Powering the Future’, came through in the insightful and enriching presentations made by various international and local experts,” said Eng Omar bin Khalfan al Wahaibi, CEO of Nama Group. “The presentations will be attended by our Ruwad members, who will be participating in a three-day workshop to develop scenarios for the future,” he added.


The first paper was presented by Professor Syed Islam, a distinguished professor in electrical power engineering and Director of the Centre for Smart Grid and Sustainable Energy Systems at the University of Curtin, Australia. The paper highlighted the importance of investing in smart networks and renewable energy, the need to use modern technology in the development of energy institutions and the most important developments in the past few years in the services provided to customers.


He was followed by Dr Hosni Ghedira, Director of the Research Center for Renewable Energy Mapping and Assessment at Masdar Institute, UAE. His paper, titled ‘Energy Economic Potential for the Utility-Scale’, focused on the importance of photovoltaic power generation as an alternative source of energy generation in the Middle East and North Africa region.

Muscat-based Shatha al Maskiry, Country Managing Director – Protiviti, highlighted in her presentation the effects of technological development on human resources and its contribution to employee efficiency, job satisfaction and the importance of using modern electronic channels and means of social communication in the process of effective communication.


There was also a talk by Christensen Fleming, Senior Projects Manager and Advisor of Energy Services and Planning Sector at CESI. In his presentation, he outlined the future vision of pure renewable energy and the economic feasibility of the solar power generation sector in Oman compared to other sources of energy.


Next, the importance of shared services via technology and the need to create an information network for the beneficiaries of the electricity sector was underscored by Michel Wu — Vice President, Digital Technology and chief information officer — GE.


Mohammed Sweidan, Enterprise Service Manager, Microsoft, spoke on the services sector and the importance of the digital transformation for the companies operating in the energy and services sector. There were also presentations by Vikesh Sachdeva, Senior Advisor in Digital Solutions at Wipro; Sadi Awienat, Vice President of Digital Industries — GE; and Sahib Osman, Client Partner, Oracle.
