By Kabeer Yousuf — MUSCAT: March 14 - Flights from Oman to some of the eastern states of the United States have been cancelled in view of the Stella storm since Tuesday, airlines and travel agencies here confirmed to the Observer. Emirates Airlines, Qatar Airways and others which carry passengers from Oman via their hubs have informed their guests to follow updates on their websites regarding rescheduling of the flights. Emirates and Etihad Airways have earlier announced cancellation of flights scheduled for Tuesday to Boston and New York, while passengers scheduled to depart or arrive at US destinations are also being advised to check their flight status.

“Due to the potential impact of winter storm Stella on flight operations at US East Coast airports, several Emirates flights scheduled to operate on March 14 have been delayed or cancelled,” said a spokeswoman for the Emirates. Eight Emirates flights were cancelled to and from New York’s JFK airport and Boston’s Logan airport on Tuesday. “We fly several times a week to the US connecting Oman and all our flights stand suspended in the wake of the blizzard warning on Monday and Tuesday,” sources at the Qatar Airways has said, adding that flights might resume on Wednesday depending upon the update from the National Weather Service (NWS).

The NWS has earlier issued blizzard warnings for parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont. “As of now, services to some parts of the US are cancelled due to the “life-threatening” storm that was poised to hit the US East Coast, bringing blizzard conditions and a blanket of heavy snow,” Sunil Prabhaker, CEO of Travel City and Travel Point that sold tickets to US-bound passengers informed. International reports suggest that more than 5,000 flights were cancelled as of late Monday afternoon, as navigation systems were being shut down from 4 am on Tuesday, while schools in New York City, Philadelphia, Boston and many places in between remained closed.
