MUSCAT, JULY 25  -

The Muscat governorate topped the list of cases registered before the public prosecution in 2016.

According to data compiled by the National Centre for Statistics and Information, the director general of Muscat had the highest number of 12,334 cases while Al Wusta had the lowest with 492 cases in 2016.

A record 94 per cent of the cases were adjudicated in 2016 with 56 per cent being reserved and 38 per cent referred to the courts.

While a total number of 37,972 cases were registered before various governorates, the number of cases received in the courts of first instance during the past year stood at 63,002.

The data reveals that efforts by the public prosecution department are bearing fruits as the number of cases has registered a fall of 7.5 per cent compared to the previous year.

Assistant Attorney General Mohammed Said al Yahyaei earlier said the prosecution department launched campaigns on TV and radio against felony and other crimes.

The data shows that the vast majority of the cases brought to the public prosecution were under felony at 32,879, while the number of criminal cases reached 2,967 and traffic violations reached 1,186 cases.
